FSMIS (July 11, 2013): On July 11, the Palau Red Cross expressed their appreciation to Federated States of Micronesia President Manny Mori and the FSM Government for the assistance of $30,000 extended to Palau for relief efforts in the wake of Typhoon Bopha.

The storm went through parts of the Republic of Palau the morning of December 3, 2012 and caused “extensive damage”.

The FSM Congressed approved the assistance which became an FSM public law on February 12, 2013.
In Palau for the purposes of the Micronesian Presidents Summit, President Mori availed himself with the opportunity that allowed Mr. Santy Asanuma and other representatives of the Palau Red Cross Society to formally express appreciation to the FSM.

President Mori said that the “small amount of money” was meant to assist with Palau’s relief efforts for those affected by the storm. He said it would have been better if the money got to Palau much sooner. He also called the assistance FSM’s “gesture of support” in the Micronesian brotherhood that binds Palau and the FSM.

Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr., who was also at the ceremony, said the amount might be considered a “small amount”, but it mattered so much to those in need.

President Remengesau echoed the words of appreciation made by Asanuma in his brief remarks during the ceremony, calling the FSM “donation” a sign of care for a fellow brother.
