On Monday October 6, 2014, Dr. Liu
Yunguo presented his letter of credentials to the Federated States of
Micronesia (FSM) Foreign Affairs Secretary Lorin Robert as the new World Health
Organization (WHO) Representative and Director of Pacific Technical Support to
the South Pacific (including Northern Micronesia). Secretary Lorin Robert congratulated Dr. Liu
Yunguo for his formal accreditation and welcomed him for the visit to the
nation’s capital.
In part of expressing his appreciation,
Secretary Robert recognized the significant investments and modest successes by
WHO. With this guidance, the health sector has been identified as being one of
the important sectors under the amended Compact for the FSM. With the building
efforts in mind, Dr. Liu Yunguo expressed that WHO will continue its role in
providing technical support to FSM health workforce with the aim to strengthen
the health system to its fullest capacity. WHO and the FSM will continue to work
together to address pressing challenges like Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD),
communicable diseases and outbreaks. To achieve overall health sector goals,
flexibility and regional collaboration is needed to mull strategies for a
significant boost.
Dr. Liu Yunguo was awarded a Doctor of
Medicine from Tongji Medical University and received his Masters from the
University of California, Berkley in Public Health. The new appointed WHO Representative and Pacific Technical Support Director
to the Pacific is based in Suva, Fiji.
