FSM Medical Coders Passed WHO Examination in ICD 10-Coding




FSM Dept. H&SA: From May 13-25, 2013, Dr. Nandalal Wijesekera, a medical specialist in community medicine registration and consultant from the World Health Organization (WHO), conducted a training for the medical records staff from all the FSM hospitals on the International Coding of Diseases (ICD-10).  This is the world standard in coding causes of deaths and diseases throughout the world.  The training took place in Yap hospital and was provided to the FSM staff in order to upscale staff capacity and quality assurance in health information coding in the nation.

Participating in the training were Siocy Soaz from the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs, Hibson Palik from Kosrae State, Silla Angesou from Chuuk State, Rosalinda Salvaldor and MaryRose Johnny from Pohnpei State, Agnes Matinag, Amanda Colburn, Celestine Chuntineg, Constance Gopluw, Cindy Yow, Darlene Giley, Jolie Gurtmag, Lucy Bigelow, and Scholastica Figir from Yap State.  All of them passed the examination with commendation from the trainer. 

The training was made possible through funding from the WHO and the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs’ share of the Amended Compact funding.
