First Annual FSM nation-wide Disaster Risk Management Conference to take place

OEEM (June 5, 2014): The Office of Environment and Emergency Management, with support from the Internation Organization for Migration (IOM) and the 10^th EDF ACP EU funded Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific project that is being implemented by Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), will organise the first annual nation-wide Disaster Risk Management in Pohnpei from June 16 – 20, 2014.

The Conference is part of the national effort to strengthen the resilience to climate change and disaster impacts of all communities in all the States in the FSM after the adoption of the Nationwide Integrated Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Policy and the Climate Change Act 2013.

The Conference will be attended by State representatives including the Disaster Coordinating Officers as well as representatives from Health, Education, Public Safety, Public Works and Weather Service.  These agencies play crucial role in the hazard detection, monitoring, issuance of warning and evacuation of the communities when the threat is eminent. Bringing them together will ensure that there is consistency in the way these agencies will support the community to enhance their safety and resilience.

The Conference is structured to be as participatory as possible where the states are required to make presentation on the disaster risk management arrangement and  activities  that exist in the states on the first day. Day two will involve presentation by national and regional partners on the various programs that they support in disaster risk management. State representatives will be given opportunities in Day three to explore ways in which those programs can assist them in strengthening their effort.

Day four and five are devoted for planning sessions where the State representatives are required to develop work plan for the next 12 months to ensure key capacity buildings that have been identified during the course of the week will be realised.

The overall active involvement of the states is envisaged after the conference to enhance community safety and resilience.
