Japan helps to further improve waste management in the FSM

New landfill in Chuuk, daily operation and maintenance of a new landfill  in Yap,  improvement of the dumpsite in Pohnpei, improvement of waste recycling in Kosrae, and development of waste management strategies and guidelines - these are amongst several activities agreed to by FSM National and State Government Officials and the Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) during the 3^rd Annual Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meeting of the Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in the Pacific Island Countries (J-PRISM).

The meeting, organized by Office of Environment and Emergency Management (OEEM), was held in Palikir, Pohnpei on February 27, 2014 and brought together, State EPAs/KIRMA and Public Works Directors to address key outputs and activities implemented in their states during the 3rd year of the J-PRISM program.  

Through the J-PRISM project, the FSM states have improved the management and operation of existing dumpsites, improved waste collection and disposal systems, developed solid waste management plans, and participated in landfill and waste management techniques trainings in Japan.  The new 2014 JPRISM work plan will be led by the State Government Agencies in collaboration with JICA and OEEM.

J-PRISM is a regional project to enhance sustainable management of solid waste in eleven Pacific countries for the purpose of strengthening human and institutional capacity through implementation of the Pacific Regional Solid Waste Management Strategy.
