The Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Lithuania Establish Diplomatic Relations

FSM UN Mission (November 5, 2013): The Federated States of Micronesia formalized its diplomatic relations with the Republic of Lithuania today at a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Nations in New York.

H.E. Jane J. Chigiyal, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia and her Lithuanian counterpart Ambassador and Permanent Representative H.E. Raimonda Murmokaite signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between their two countries.

The joint communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations signed by the two Ambassadors expresses the desires to sustain and to strengthen the friendly relations between their two States in the mutual interest of their peoples. It further states that the two countries establish diplomatic relations in accordance with the provision of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 18 April 1961.

The Federated States of Micronesia has been expanding its diplomatic ties with friendly countries around the world and the Republic of Lithuania becomes the 71st country with which the Federated States of Micronesia has established diplomatic relations.

Lithuania, the largest and most southerly of the three Baltic republics, became a member of the United Nations on 18 September 1991, the same day the Federated States of Micronesia was admitted as a member of the world body.  Lithuania was recently elected to one of the non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council for a two year term.  Lithuania currently holds the Presidency of the European Union (1 July 2013 – 31 December 2013).
