US Federal Government shutdown, how it impacts the FSM

FSMIS (October 8, 2013): As the United States Federal Government shutdown lingers on, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) National Government receives inquiries on possible impacts the situation will cast on government services throughout the FSM.

FSM President Manny Mori wrote to the Leaders of the State and National Governments on October 3^rd, providing information available at the time regarding possible implications of the shutdown.

According to the President, Compact grants will not be affected by the shutdown. He also stated that he had learned the staff of the Honolulu-based Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) and the OIA staff in the US Embassy in Kolonia would be able to carry on their roles, keeping intact the procedures for processing of FY2014 grants.

“All discretionary US Federal programs and projects that FSM is accessing will be affected by the shut-down, but exactly how and by how much will depend on the nature of the program in question. We are working with the relevant line departments at the National Government to assess the extent of the impact and will send out further information as they become available from the affected line departments.”
