Foreign Affairs (August 21, 2013): Vice President Alik L. Alik
represented the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia to the Pacific
Island Development Forum (PIDF) which was held in Nadi, Fiji from August 5-7,
2013. The PIDF is a successor of the
Engaging with the Pacific Meetings held last year, in which the FSM was
represented by Suva-based Ambassador Gerson Jackson. The Honorable
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste
attended the Forum as the "Chief Guest" with attendance by leadership representatives from Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Islands,
Marshall Islands, Tonga, and Papua New Guinea. Member of the civil societies,
the business sector and donor partners were also in observance.
The PIDF
considered a framework for bringing together governmental, business and civil
society leaders to secure concrete commitments and mobilize action in support
of the Green Economy. Among others,
discussions also highlighted the outcome of the United Nations Conference on
Sustainable Development 2012 (Rio +20) which endorsed the green economy concept
as a tool for sustainable development in the region. The concept aims to
promote economic, social and environmental sustainable future for present and
future generations within the Pacific region.
After the
Forum in Nadi, Vice President Alik traveled to Suva where he had meetings with
the President/Vice Chancellor of the Fiji National University, Investment Fiji,
which is an independent entity under the Department of Ministry of Industry
& Trade, and the Land Management Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific
Community. He also toured a company in
Fiji that is specialized in Mud (Mangrove) Crab Production.
The Vice President
was accompanied by Secretary Marion Henry of the Department of Resources and
Development, Ambassador Gerson Jackson of the FSM Embassy in Fiji and Mr.
Carson Mongkeya from the Department of Foreign Affairs.
